A rare case of eradication of parasitic fibroids in Al Zahra Hospital Sharjah

A team of doctors at NMC Royal Hospital,Sharjah led by Dr. Mohammed Al Hasoun , successfully treated a rarely seen post surgical complication.

Mrs.X, in her mid forties, presented with multiple intra abdominal masses. Patient had undergone 2 surgeries in the past for removal of uterine fibroids (laparoscopic myomectomy) Investigations and work up revealed the possibility of parasitic fibroids.

Patient underwent laparoscopic removal of 6 parasitic fibroids in the abdomen (in the omentum and the peritoneum of the anterior abdominal wall)

Patient made an uneventful recovery and was discharged from the hospital.

Parasitic fibroids are fibroids which develop in the abdomen due to accidental spillage of uterine tissue in the abdominal cavity during a myomectomy. When the fibroids are removed from the abdomen they are pulverised into small bits (a process called morsellation) to facilitate removal of large sized fibroids through the small laparoscopic incisions.

This is done by a specific instrument in a special bag meant for morsellation.

Accidental spillage of this morsellated uterine tissue in the abdomen can rarely develop into uterine fibroids wherever they get implanted.

It is a very rare complication that is seldom seen in clinical practice.
