What is a rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is the surgery that aims to address the shape of your nose from the front view and/or the side view. Many people feel that their nose is either too large in some way, has a bump or they wish it turned up or down more at the tip. The surgery changes the shape by removing, altering or adding to the underlying bone and cartilage structures, and the skin is then re-draped over the new structure. The surgery aims to produce a nose that appears natural, functions correctly and is balanced and harmonious with the rest of your face. Dramatic changes are not desirable and the ‘operated’ look should be avoided.

Would I be suitable?

It is important to remember that it is not always possible to have your ‘dream’ nose. One can realistically only use what is naturally yours as a framework for the surgery, and there are factors beyond our control that will have an effect on the surgery.

These are:

  • The thickness of your Thicker skin is more difficult to drape over the new structure and can accommodate more swelling.
  • The natural proportions of your face will effect how small your nose should be to look
  • The natural structure of your nose determines its position on your

  • We prefer not to operate on teenagers until they have finished their growth spurt. This is around fifteen to sixteen for girls and sixteen to seventeen for boys. It is very important to consider the emotional and social development of the patient at this stage and after ‘A’ levels may be a better time for surgery to take

What won’t a rhinoplasty do for me?

A rhinoplasty will not get you a new job or make you into a top model. However it will address the areas that you dislike which might reduce any feelings of self-consciousness, therefore boosting your confidence.

How long will the effects last for?

The effects of surgery will be permanent; however, the ageing process will continue and if you damage your nose in an accident or sporting injury we cannot guarantee that your nose shape will not be altered.

Will I have scars?

Scarring will depend on the technicalities of your surgery. You should discuss this in further detail at your consultation.

What are the risks?

All surgery has some risk associated with it, although this is usually minor. We go out of our way to minimise these occurring, but it is important that you are aware of the possible problems.

General Risks:

  • Any surgery that involves a general anaesthetic carries the risk of a chest infection and thrombosis, especially if you are a
  • It is important to tell your surgeon if you are taking the oral contraceptive pill or any blood thinning drugs such as Warfarin or Aspirin so that we can minimize the risk of bleeding and

Specific Risks:

  • Infections are rare, but are treatable with anti-biotics.
  • Heavy bleeding from a broken blood vessel is unusual, but should it occur another small operation might be necessary to cauterise the flow. Slight blood leakage can occur more frequently and may show as similar to a normal bruise or a firm lump underneath the skin. These normally absorb naturally but can be drained if the surgeon thinks it is clinically
  • Some people scar more easily than others, or form thick, red, irritable scars or have scars that stretch. This is a small risk, and can be anticipated based on other scars on your body.

What can I expect on the day of surgery?

You must not eat or drink for the six hours before you come into hospital.

The anaesthetist and the surgeon will come to see you prior to surgery to ensure you are well, answer any questions and will sign a consent form with you. For your own safety you should answer all of their questions fully.

When you wake from the anaesthetic you will be in the recovery department. Here the nurses will make sure you wake up fully and give you pain relief and anti- sickness drugs should you require them. A Nurse from the ward will then collect you and take you back to your room where she will check on you every half an hour or so, until you are fully awake and stable.

You will feel drowsy at first, and often people feel a little weepy. This is normal.

You will have some tape and a splint over your nose; this should stay in place until your follow up appointment one week following surgery. You may also have some packing in your nose, which will be removed in the first few days following surgery. You will also find that your nose drips a little for the first few days and for this reason a pad will be placed over your nostrils. You will need to breathe, cough and sneeze with your mouth open so that pressure does not build up in the nose and sinuses.

How will I feel afterwards?

The day after your surgery Dr. Nadeem Akthar will see you. Your face may look bruised and unfamiliar at first and this often shocks people when they look in the mirror for the first time. The anaesthetic will make you feel sleepy and a bit removed from normal life; this wears off within two to five days, when you will feel like yourself again. You will be well enough to go home on the day after your surgery.

Conclusion

Rhinoplasty surgery will aim to address any of the problems that you have with the shape of your nose. It is important to be realistic about the results that can be reasonably achieved. There are risks associated with all surgery which we will minimise as much as possible. Rhinoplasty surgery cannot change your life, but it can boost your confidence.
